The Center for the Study of Liberal Democracy (CSLD) seeks to enrich the intellectual life of UW students, faculty, and the Madison community at large through research and public discussion. The CSLD invites early and mid-career faculty, with established records of scholarship in Constitutional Studies and/or Political Theory, to participate in this mission as Visiting Fellows. Fellowship are for the academic year (August 15, 2017 to June 30, 2018). Only in exceptional circumstances will the CSLD consider one-semester appointments.

Visiting Fellows must spend the academic year in residence in Madison, WI. Fellows are expected to pursue their proposed research full time, but are encouraged to attend or to participate in the various activities of the Center, including political theory workshops, campus colloquia, and public lectures. Fellows will have access to the various academic and non-academic facilities on campus.

Visiting Fellows will usually be tenured, or on the tenure track, at their home institutions and on sabbatical or junior sabbatical. The CSLD will make available a stipend of up to one-half of an academic-year salary, plus research monies. Fellows’ home institutions are expected to provide one half to two thirds of their academic-year salaries, in addition to all benefits.

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of (1) the quality of the proposed research; (2) the quality of the past research; and (3) the contribution the applicant is likely to make to the mission of the CSLD.

For full consideration, applicants are required to submit an application including:

  • a letter describing the proposed research (two page max)
  • a curriculum vitae
  • a recent scholarly paper
  • contact information for two references
  • a confidential statement stating the applicant's salary for the current academic year and the level of financial support the applicant's home institution will provide
